Dwarf Hairgrass is a live aquarium plant that brings a fine-bladed green carpet to freshwater aquascapes. Its low-growing form adds a meadow-like texture to the foreground or midground, with cover for shrimp and small fish among the blades.

Medium to high lighting and adequate nutrients support spreading and denser growth. CO₂ injection is optional, but it can encourage faster spreading and a thicker carpet. For a new layout, the plant can also be grown emersed in humid conditions using the Dry Start Method.

Plant small plugs about ½–1 inch apart without burying the crown too deeply. Some initial melting can occur as the plant adapts, and growth speed and appearance vary with lighting, CO₂ and nutrients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I plant Dwarf Hairgrass in my aquarium?

Plant Dwarf Hairgrass in the foreground or midground to create a low green carpet. Space small plugs about ½–1 inch apart and avoid burying the crown too deeply.

Does Dwarf Hairgrass need CO₂ injection?

Dwarf Hairgrass does not require CO₂ injection, but added CO₂ can help it spread faster and form a denser carpet. Medium to high lighting and adequate nutrients also support growth.

What water conditions suit Dwarf Hairgrass?

Dwarf Hairgrass suits freshwater aquariums kept at 68–82°F (20–28°C) with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Use nutrient-rich aquarium soil or fine sand for planting.

Can I use Dwarf Hairgrass for a dry start?

Yes, Dwarf Hairgrass can grow emersed in humid conditions for the Dry Start Method. This approach can encourage rooting and carpet development before the aquarium is filled.

Which planting formats can I buy?

Dwarf Hairgrass comes as 1, 3 or 5 clumps, rooted in a 2-inch pot, or on a 3 × 5-inch coir mat. Select the format that suits your planting layout.

Why might Dwarf Hairgrass melt after planting?

Dwarf Hairgrass can experience initial melting while adapting to its new aquarium. Keep the crown from being buried too deeply and maintain suitable lighting and nutrients; growth is slower in low-tech setups.
